Uh oh, I know you’re thinking it. You’re seeing the title of this post and thinking I’m going to dissolve into one of those blogs that just talk about the importance of goals and use this to track my goals. Not necessarily. I still like the things that I have been posting, but every so often, I’m going to throw a goal in here. And, it’s a great time to do it because it’s the beginning of a new month.
So I was thinking about training for a marathon this year—nothing special like ‘Iron Woman’ or anything like that, just a short 10k. A 10k is 6.21400 Miles. Now, if you’re like me, you see that six miles and think, ‘Wow, I could never do that.’ But really, it’s doable.
A month or even six weeks ago, I wasn’t doing much walking. At all. And by not much, I mean, I never tracked anything, just walked when I normally did. But then, I started going out and making a commitment to walk X amount of miles a day. Usually it’s during my breaks at work, or at lunch. During breaks, I walk around the building, and it’s a pretty big building. And then I would either do a few laps at lunch or just go over to the park and walk for an hour.
I use the time to make peace with myself. I use the time to think things through. And then, I started running. And it’s fabulous.
Now, up until this point in my life, while I had run a little here and there, my outlook on running is a little like Stephanie Plum’s. I don’t want to run unless my life is in danger, but if it ever is, I should probably practice so I CAN outrun whomever/whatever I need to. Yes, I know, it’s a little weird, but it makes sense. Runners are these people in these color coordinated outfits who discuss converting food into their body’s energy. They probably eat bulgar wheat. Runners probably have all sorts of theories about efficiency and how they can best become streamlined…
Let me say this now, I’m not any of those things. I have my little Nike shoes, pink and black. I have a pair of yoga pants from the Gap. I have socks from the Gap. And I have a few t-shirts that are my ‘workout’ shirts. I carry my iPod if only because it has the pedometer function so I can find out how long I’ve been out. If there are people around, I turn on the iPod. If there are not people around, well, then it’s just me jamming with silent headphones.
I normally encounter some pretty cool people on these jaunts as well. They mouth ‘Hello’ or nod or smile at me, all the while walking their dog or pushing their children or working on doing their own thing. And it’s really cool. It’s like we’re all in the same club and we share a secret.
