The Girl in the Flammable Skirt:: A Short Story Collection by Aimee Bender
I have a love/hate relationship with short story collections. Sometimes I just can’t wrap by head around them. But, I remember one of the Rubber City Book Posse members telling me YEARS ago that I might enjoy Bender’s work. This particular book say in my head for years, until I finally made the leap and decided to read it–it was GREAT. I am very happy that I got the chance to read it.
Aimee Bender’s work is filled with beautiful, thoughtful words and characters and situations that LEAP off the page. There is a hint of believeable fiction as well as a LOT of crazy situations and even crazier images. Needless to say, there will be a lot of thought readers will have when picking up this book.
It was so hard to pick one or two stories out of this collection to make a central theme, but I will say that Drunken Mimi stands out, not only because it was short, but because it was completely and utterly lovely. I kept thinking of its characters and felt like what Bender introduced within it was as close to perfection as I thought it would be.
I cannot wait for others to read this and let me know what you think! I picked this up on Amazon, but it is available to purchase in your favorite format from your favorite retailer today (it was originally published in 1998!).
