May The Fourth Be With You

Happy May 4th, a day hailed by many as Star Wars day (May the Fourth Be With You).
So, because of that, you might see some awesome deals are Star Wars merchandise around the web, and at stores near you—it’s a great day to celebrate Star Wars—especially since we’re getting a NEW STAR WARS MOVIE this year.

Above, you’ll see a recently read book posing next to my Mara Jade Statuette. You may not know this, but in the old Star Wars extended universe, Mara Jade is amazing and, I feel, tells the ultimate tale of redemption.

With the acquisition of Star Wars by Disney, a lot of the previous books (what happened after Episode VI) was pushed out, to make room for the new movies. While it totally makes sense, I feel like this is a big mistake.

Why? Because Mara Jade and Jaina Solo (Han and Leia’s daughter) are in that extended universe. They are amazing and strong characters. FEMALE characters, who wield the Force as good as anyone else.

Mara Jade had been raised to be the Emperor’s Hand, basically his right hand. Anytime someone needed to be ‘dealt with’, Mara would go out and strike back. Eventually, she came over to the light side of the Force (and married Luke Skywalker), but became a Jedi and still maintained her independence.

This was a great thing for me to read as a kid. And while I am sure there will be great characters in the new series, I really hope that people don’t forget about Mara Jade.

Who is your favorite Star Wars character?
