:: Review:: Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

Sophie lives with her two sisters and her stepmother. When the girls are sent to live with other people, to make their apprenticeships, Sophie is lucky to stay with her stepmother. She makes the beautiful hats that keep a roof over their head. But one day she listens to one of her sisters, and realizes maybe she’s being used.

Soon Sophie has crossed paths with the wizard Howl (rumored to eat the hearts of young women), then been turned into a crone by a witch. And shortly after that, she’s living in Howl’s mysterious, traveling castle. She stokes the fire demon in the hearth and helps keep the house clean. Apprentice Michael is sometimes on her side, and sometimes not. But then Howl comes home and he’s not happy with Sophie. He gives her orders and begrudgingly lets her stay below the staircase.

But life in the moving castle is not all that it seems. As the group travels to mysterious lands, Sophie begins to learn more about Howl as she attempts to solve a mystery surrounding the fire demon’s freedom, all the while as a crone.

This book was much sweeter than I thought it would be. And I had no idea it was part of a trilogy. Of course, I really want to see the movie—that can definitely happen now!

Have you read this book? Have you read the whole trilogy? Have you just seen the film? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
