GothamGal is a devoted comic fan. Reading comics from an early age (TinTin, Archie, Katie Keene and much more), she has recently revisited her old interest and is branching out into the streets of unread comics and graphic novels! While she favors DC Comics, Marvel is slowly winning her over—but Vertigo, Image and IDW have so many new things to offer, she might just say she’s a comic fan—with no labels. She fights for literature, education and the right for ALL to read comics!

I’ve made no secret of the fact I am not a Superman fan. But, having seen a collection of these hardcovers (with digital copies of the books, and physical copies of the associated movies AND digital copies) at our local-ish Fry’s Electronics, I decided I had to try it (if only for the chance to see the movie associated with this book, Doomsday). And, the part on the cover that says it is ‘the best-selling graphic novel of all time’ doesn’t hurt, either.

Superman is being interviewed on tv as a report comes in that members of the Justice League have been pummeled by an unknown assailant. Superman immediately goes to the source, and finds Doomsday. He fights with Superman all around the country, ending up in Metropolis. Superman dies in the arms of Lois Lane.

It is definitely striking. I can remember it being a big deal, even living in the middle of nowhere, because the original fight between Doomsday and the JLA happens in Bucyrus, Ohio (which was close to the middle of nowhere). This was an iconic story and while all of us know that Superman is alive and well, I found myself turned up inside, reading the story of one of our bravest heroes fighting for our very freedoms.

The art is very representative of the early 90s (1992) era. It was nice to see the strong colors. While the copy I have is high-quality and has glossy paper, I could easily see the illustrations on pulpy paper. The blues are VERY blue, and contrast well with the red of Superman’s cape. I love this edition of the book, and wholeheartedly recommend it.
