5 Comics You’re Not Reading (But Should Be)

AlwaysReiding.ComGothamGal is a devoted comic fan. Reading comics from an early age (TinTin, Archie, Katie Keene and much more), she has recently revisited her old interest and is branching out into the streets of unread comics and graphic novels! While she favors DC Comics, Marvel is slowly winning her over—but Vertigo, Image and IDW have so many new things to offer, she might just say she’s a comic fan—with no labels. She fights for literature, education and the right for ALL to read comics. This week, she’s got a list of 5 Comics You’re Not Reading (But Should Be).

People ask me a lot what comics to read, which is awesome and daunting all in one. Why? Because sometimes you just cannot be sure what people will be interested in. So, with that in mind, I’m going to give you 5 Comics You’re Not Reading (but should be). You’ll probably love them all, but if you aren’t keen on one, there are four others you keep you busy! They all are available at your local comic book shop or even your book store!

Lumberjanes Vol 1

Archie is new and improved, or rather, he’s the same Archie in a Riverdale that more closely reflects our ever-changing world. Mark Waid and Fiona Staples team up to breath some new life into the residents of Riverdale. There are some new faces and some classic faces–and it is 100% awesome.

Speaking of awesome, The Totally Awesome Hulk series is breathing new life into Marvel’s Angry Green Man.  Amadeus Cho is the prodigy who eats a lot and Hulks a lot–but keeps both in check, thanks in part to his genius and part to his sister (who travels with him in a food truck). Can Amadeus survive the Hulk–or will the mean green take over?

For those who like fantasy, or for those who openly mock it, Rat Queens is a refreshing and hilarious series that features strong women, a lot of Bobs and much more! I was able to read this and laugh, and have recommended it to my fantasy-loving friends who have also roared hysterically. It’s a WIN all the way around, and contains mature themes.

Lumberjanes is an all ages comic with a crew of can-do attitudes as they stumble through life at summer camp, and the internal and external changes in adolescence. It is a comic about friends, and the bonds that tie us together as friends. And, it is about survival of all sorts of crazy things–if you or someone you know like ‘Gravity Falls’ or ‘Eerie, Ohio’, this is a good bet!

Locke & Key is the most masterfully-crafted horror novel I have read in a while. It features strong writing, stunning images and fantastic characters that will stay with you for a long time after you’ve finished. The son of Stephen King, Joe Hill KNOWS what it is like to build drama and the pacing necessary to craft horror. SO amazing!

  1. NIghtwing!

But, then I’m a total Batman fan, and have loved Dick Grayson for a while.
I’d say Fables, but they finished up their run last year, but if you want a great story arc, read that.

  3. Awesome! I want to check out Rat Queens. I’ve only just dabbled in comics before, but would love to open myself to more.

  4. I haven’t read comics since I was a kid and LOVE that you have the rebooted Archie on the list. I’ll have to check that out and Lumberjanes – how fun! (BTW: I came over from the ProBlogger challenge.)
